What Core Values Are Not

Back Up Next

II.                What Core Values are Not

A.     Values are not a Mission

1.      The mission is a statement of what the ministry is supposed to accomplish.

2.      The mission answers the why question of the ministry.

B.     Values are not a Vision

1.      Like the mission, the vision also addresses what the ministry is supposed to be doing according to the Bible. Whereas the mission states in one sentence what you plan to accomplish, the vision paints a picture of the same.

2.      Our mission at Solid Rock as I see it involves a hill that an Army needs to take; the vision is what the Army will look like on top of the hill.

3.      Ministry values should differ from the vision in at least three fundamental ways:

a.       Vision answers the what question. It provides a clear snapshot of what the church is supposed to be doing. [It challenges people and motivates them.]

“Some people see things the way they are and ask why; I see things the way they could be and ask why not?” John F. Kennedy

b.      Contrary to what many believe, a church is not vision-driven. It is values-driven and vision-focused.

** When a ministry takes time to carefully articulate its vision, its future comes into focus. People are better able to see the future.

** Values move the ministry. They are hidden motivators that dictate every decision we make, every problem we solve, and every dollar we spend.

c.       Every church has a core set of values whether (good or bad) they know it or not. Why? Because something drives the ministry. However, a church may not have a vision. They haven’t given much thought to what their future looks like.

C.     Values are not a Strategy

1.      Do not equate values with strategy. While primary beliefs answer the why question, strategy answers the how question.

2.      Strategy addresses how you will realize your mission.

*** The early Church adopted the Great Commission as their Mission Statement (Acts 1:8) [cf. Matt 28:19, Mark 16:15].

Their strategy for realizing this mission primarily consisted of the Three Missionary journeys Luke recorded:

a.)    Acts 13 – 14

b.)    Acts 15:36 – 18:22

c.)    Acts 18:23 – 21:16

3.      The biblical values that surfaced in ministries such as the church at Jerusalem (Acts 2:42 – 47) deeply influenced the strategy.

 D.    Values are not a Doctrinal Statement

1.  A church’s doctrinal statement is a written document of its collected Theological beliefs.

So what are Core Values?
