III. What Core Values Are – Definition Core Values are the constant, passionate, biblical core beliefs that drive ministry. They consist of five vital components:
A. Core Values are Constant 1. It has been said that the only thing you can be sure of is death and taxes. Today, we must add change. 2. The question for the church is: How will it choose to respond to change? 3. The key dealing with change is determining what will help the church versus what will hurt it. How is this possible? a.) Discover and articulate the ministry’s fundamental hierarchy of values, e.g. Acts 2:42 – 47 – The Jerusalem Church understood its values. Core Values
i. Expository teaching (Acts 2: 42-43) ii. Fellowship (Acts 2:42) iii. Prayer (Acts 2:42) iv. Biblical community (Acts 2:44 – 46) v. Praise & Worship (Acts 2:47) vi. Evangelism (Acts 2:47)
Additionally, in Acts 6:1 – 7 their ministry focus was prayer and the ministry of The Word.
** Values cannot/must not be in transition!
B. Core Values are Passionate 1. Whereas vision is a “seeing” word, passion is a “feeling” word. 2. Core beliefs do more than build a fire in our heart and stir your emotions. They move you to action. They are infectious. 3. They move or drive you toward the vision – from what is, to what ought to be.
